Hot race for daCosta semi berths - Glenmuir face Clarendon College at Brooks Park

Animated cellphone contact could be the order of the day when two Clarendon teams face interesting hurdles to grab the remaining ISSA/Pepsi/JN daCosta Cup semi-final spot when the last quarter-final encounters in Group One unfold tomorrow.

At the St. Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) playfield in Santa Cruz, Garvey Maceo (one point) need a resounding win against Rusea's, whose chances ended after two successive defeats against Clarendon teams at the same ground.

For Glenmuir High who have four points, a draw would be good enough against home and dry Clarendon College at Brooks Park in Mandeville.

Interesting possibilities

However, that mere outcome is also something about which they could harbour reservations as the two spots from the opposing Group Two are also being decided. That is where another Clarendon team, Denbigh High, could have a say as they prepare to play another semi-final hopeful, Titchfield (two points) at Brancourt.

The possibilities are so interesting depending on where the emotional support lies. With two Clarendon teams guaranteed semi-final berths, support is definitely split in these parts as to who should get the other. Clarendon College have already qualified but must be quietly keen to avoid playing a team like Frome (four points) who could also be harbouring similar thoughts as they prepare to secure their spot with victory or a draw against Bog Walk (four points) at Elliston Wakeland Centre in Trelawny.

During an interview conducted at the STETHS ground at the weekend with Clarendon College coach Kevin Williams as he watched his former team, Portmore, play Reno in the Premier League, the above-mentioned scenarios were placed squarely before him.

"My goal is to win the competition," Williams told Star Sports. "I do my job first, I don't depend on anybody (other team). I always play to win; any team I put out there, I must be competitive. That's how I coach."
