Facey to miss 'trials'

By ANTHONY FOSTER, Freelance Writer

WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 100m silver medallist Simone Facey is the only 'big name' out of this weekend's National Athletics Championships.

Facey, who won silver at the 2002 World Junior Championship held in Kingston, had earlier missed the latter part of the college season due to a nagging hamstring injury sustained at the beginning of the outdoor season.

Facey, who now competes for Barton County Community College in Kansas, U.S.A., finished the indoor season with times of 7.32 and 23.43.

At the Bulldog Invitational in April, Facey, who anchored Jamaica's junior 4x100m team to gold at the World Junior was slated to face fellow Jamaican Aleen Bailey in the 100m but the Barton freshman was unable to finish the race.

It was reported that her injury developed from a cramp she had in the very first outdoor meet.

Ludlow Watts, chairman of the organising committee for this weekend's National Senior and Junior Athletics Championships, said yesterday that Facey's injury is 'not too bad', but the athlete who is also the national junior record holder for 200m, has opted not to compete.
