Ruthless Jamaica Crush Grenada

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

Powerhouses Jamaica kept up their winning start to the Americas Federation of Netball Associations (AFNA) Championships on Sunday evening when they clobbered Grenada 107-13 in their second game at the Jean Pierre Complex.

The Sunshine Girls jumped to a dominant 32-2 lead after the first quarter and never eased up the throttle. They were ahead 60-8 at half-time and then produced a ruthless third-quarter performance to keep the Grenadians scoreless, as they pumped in 23 goals.

Jamaica's goal shoot Shantel Slater led the rout with 33 from 37 attempts, with goal attack Anna Kay Griffith weighing in with 22 goals from 28 attempts.

Goal attack Patricia McCalla also shone with 25 from 27 and Jhaneile Fowler, 27 from 51 attempts.

For lowly Grenada, Cecile Roberts shot seven from 13 attempts and Christa Stephen got six of nine.

Marvellous effort

There was also a huge win for St Lucia, who crushed Guyana 85-17, to rebound from their battering at the hands of Jamaica on Saturday's opening day.

Goal shoot Indira Laurenain led St Lucia's marvellous effort by shooting 41 from 46 attempts while goal attack Shem Maxwell (23/37) and goal shoot Gabriel Glalta (16/19) gave excellent support.

St Lucia rushed to a 24-2 lead, which they converted into a half-time advantage of 44-6.

The third quarter was another rout as they outscored the Guyanese 20-6, before cruising in the final quarter.

For Guyana, Adeline McCarthy led the scoring with 12 from 19 attempts.

Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago also picked up convincing wins, albeit not by overly flattering margins.

Goal shoot Laurel Brown scored 34 from 39 attempts to help the Barbadians overcome the United States 52-22. The Barbadians led 13-6, 25-11 and 38-15 throughout the first three quarters to control the game from the outset.

T&T, meanwhile, were led by Anastasia Wilson, who shot 39 from 45 attempts to fire Trinidad and Tobago to a 55-28 victory over Canada.
