Gold-Medal Finish For Sts Peter & Paul

Robert Bailey, Gleaner Writer
MIAMI, FLorida:

Sts Peter and Paul's Prep team of Natina Smith, Sanaa Wong, Riana Battick and Alexis Gordon-Martin brought the Primary and Prep section of the three-day Northwest Track and Field Classic to a close with a gold medal run in the 4x100m last Sunday night at the Traz Powell Stadium in Miami, Florida.

The purple and white clad girls' team sped to a 1:07.4 clocking to win the event ahead of Miami Northwest (1:08.04).

The Javaun Moore-coached team, which captured 11 medals in 2011, ended the championships with six medals - two gold, two silver and two bronze.

Colin English captured Sts Peter and Paul's first gold medal of the championships, when he won the age 9-10 high jump, while Anissa Walker won silver in the girls 11-12 high jump.

Sts Peter and Paul also won silver in the boys 7-8 4x100m and bronze medals in the 9-10 and 11-12 4x100m relays, respectively.

Moore said he was pleased with his team's performance.

"I think my athletes did fairly well," he said. "The condition out there was very hot and I think that this affected the performance of our athletes during the championships."

Meanwhile, Joel Davey from Ensom City Primary won the boys 7-8 200m in 36.22. Horatio Wanliss from St Aloysius took home bronze in 34.52.

Darby took home gold

Joshua Darby from John Mills took home the gold in the boys 13-14 200m in 23.69 seconds.

Kayla Evans from St Jago Prep won gold in the girls 9-10 200m in 28.47 seconds ahead of Greater Portmore's Shade Grant (28.59) and Shankia Smith of St Richards Primary (30.01).

Saydrian Campbell of St Richards outsprinted his rivals to capture the boys equivalent in 28.71. Ashley Gavin from Whitehall Primary won bronze in the 11-12 200m in 27.58.

Shanika Smith from St Richards won bronze in the girls 8-9 400m in 1:12.01, while St Patrick's Primary's Jason Guthrie won silver in the boys 9-10 400m in 1:06.99.
