Digicel Maintains Link With Special Olympians

Local communications company Digicel Jamaica recently handed over a cheque valued at $2.5 million to the Jamaica Special Olympic team to assist the journey to Athens, Greece, for the 2011 summer Special Olympic World Games.

Speaking at a special breakfast held for the team, Digicel's sponsorship manager, Paula Pinnock-MacLeod, reinforced the company's commitment to the Special Olympic team. "Digicel has been proud sponsors of the Special Olympic team for 10 years - as long as the company has been in operation. This is a relationship that is definitely dear to our hearts." Pinnock-MacLeod said.

She added: "We are extremely proud of the team's achievements to date and, as such, it was just a natural fit for us to support their journey to Athens."

Pinnock-MacLeod also congratulated the coaching and technical staff for the great job they have done in preparing members of the Special Olympic team for the World Games.

Echoing the sentiments of Pinnock-MacLeod, Lorna Bell, executive director of the Special Olympic Association, thanked Digicel for its contribution, noting it will surely go a far way in making the journey to Athens easier.

Further aid

"Digicel has always supported the Special Olympic team over the years and, as the official telecommunication sponsor of the team, we are extremely delighted that they were able to provide us with further aid as the team seeks to represent their country on the international stage."

Digicel has been the official telecommunication sponsor of the Special Olympic team since 2001 and has supported all other activities to raise funds for the team's journey to Athens, including sponsorship of the Law Enforcement Torch Run held earlier last month, uniforms for the team and the sale of the Special Olympic team magazine in all Digicel dealer stores. The telecommunications company will also be providing the team with cellphones and call credit so they can stay connected to friends and family while in Athens.
