UTech, UWI retain TT titles

 
Defending champions, University of Technology (UTech) and University of the West Indies (UWI) retained their male and female Inter-Collegiate Table Tennis titles, respectively, at the UTech Auditorium on Sunday.

In the male final, UTech thrashed UWI Pelicans 5-0 while in contrasting style in the female final, UWI Pelicans edged the UTech Knights 3-2, with victory being secured only in the fifth and final match, after the scores were locked at two wins apiece after the fourth match.

In the men's semi-finals, UTech Knights and UWI Pelicans won by default from G.C. Foster College and The Mico University College, respectively, as these teams did not turn up for the match. On the females' side, the finalists had already been decided, from points standings in the rounds.

Outplayed

In individual results for the male final between UTech and UWI, Don-Walker Petinaud outplayed Darren Salmon 11-7, 9-11, 11-5, 11-5 (3-1), Tomlinson defeated Darrell Gordon 11-5, 12-10, 11-2 (3-0), Emani McPherson overpowered Saeed Thomas 11-5, 11-3, 11-6 (3-0) and Kareem Flowers beat Dexter Smith 11-6, 11-4, 11-5 (3-0) in singles matches. In the doubles, McPherson and Jermaine Newell stopped Thomas and Gordon 11-7, 11-7, 11-8 (3-0), for UTech Knights' 5-0 victory.

In the females' final, national representative Shenique Clare overwhelmed Jamilla Fairweather 11-9, 11-4,11-8 (3-0) and Shantal Bailey defeated Sodia Peters 11-9, 12-10, 6-11, 11-6 (3-1) in singles matches, and Clare and Bailey crushed Fairweather and Latoya Lynch 11-9, 11-4, 11-8 ( 3-0) in the doubles, for UWI's three triumphs.

Lynch defeated Melanie Smithson 11-3, 11-4, 11-7 (3-0) and Rochelle Ferguson won by default from Carla Clarke, for UTech's two consolation wins.
