Williams lights up Palisadoes track
Glenroy Sinclair, Assignment Coordinator
Like a hot knife cutting through butter, 15-year-old Matthew Williams weaved his way through the tightly bunched pack of karters to register an impressive victory in the annual Abe Ziadie Memorial race meet held on the weekend at the Palisdoes Inter-national Raceway, Kingston. The Hillel High schoolboy, who shed over 34 pounds to condition himself for this season, looked a picture of confidence as he sped away from his rivals to grab the chequered flag. It was his third win of the day at what was the final race meet of the Jamaica Karting Association's schedule of events for 2010. With more than a dozen karters taking the green flag, Matthew, who started from the back of the pack, showed little respect for his fellow competitors, which included his driving coach, Peter Rae. Other stars of the meet were Thomas Issa, who wrapped up both the Mini Max and Driver of the Year championship, along with Fraser McDonnell, the consistent Jonathan Law and the stout-hearted Joshua Sirgany, who produced the fastest lap time of the day. "Come next year, Jonathan (Law) will have a more competitive engine, so they should watch out for him," said his dad, Sammy Law. Also among the karters who did well were Peter Moodie Jr, Dr Derrick Mc Dowell and his son, Jordan, Krishna Tong, Roshane Hiel and Triston Emmons. Veterans Mike Simmons and Rae were the respective champions in the Super Masters Class. Simmons won the overall championship, while Rae won the Falls Championship, having the most wins for the last quarter of the season. 2010 ChampionsRotax Mini Mx Class: (1) Thomas Issa (204), Fraser McConnell (179), Jonathan Law (149) Rotax Junior Class: (1) Matthew William's (118), Collin Daley Jr (113), William Myers (65) Masters Class: (1) Peter Wong (161), Garth Genus (150), Dr Mark Minott (134) Super Masters Class: (1) Mike Simmons (102), Peter Rae (69), Dr Derrick McDowell (67) Abe Ziadie Memorial Trophy (Driver of the Year title): (1) Thomas Issa (2) Fraser McConnell (3) Peter Wong.
