Geddes goal sinks St Georges

Gareth Davis, Freelance Reporter

Portland - A 36th minute strike from Ricardo Geddes gave visiting Seba United a hard fought 1-0 victory over St Georges at Lynch Park in a Cash Plus Premier League encounter yesterday. Victory enabled the St James team to leapfrog Georges by a point as it advanced to 34 points.

It was Seba United who started the early attack through Geddes and Seian McNish, forcing St Georges to play a more defensive game. The Montegonians should have taken the lead in the fourth minute when Geddes broke loose inside the 18-yard box but with only goal keeper Anthoniel Williams to beat, he fired wide.

WIDE SHOT

Although Georges were forced on the backfoot, their leading goal scorer, Damian Harwood, received a ball from midfield, went by two defenders then shot wide.

That miss proved costly as Seba continued to dominate the first half with repeated attacks and were rewarded when Geddes bulldozed his way into the 18-yard box and headed home for a 1-0 lead.

At the start of the second half Georges looked a totally different team with Damian Harwood, James Barrington, Damian Reid, Lenox Gargill and Brian Wollaston leading their charge for an equaliser.

In the 78th minute Georges almost pulled level when Dale Wallace played the ball to Harwood, whose shot was brilliantly blocked by Seba's custodian. The homesters kept up the pressure on for the better part of 35 minutes but failed to find the equaliser.

"In the second half we came out pressing for the equaliser," said St Georges coach, Donovan Duckie.

"Our players by then realized that they were on the losing end and really put out their best. Although we lost I must commend the effort showed in the second half.

Norman Foster, deputising as coach in the absence of Theodore Whitmore, said: "We expected Georges to put up a good performance and they did."

He added: "We had to stave off some amount of pressure during the second half to maintain our one goal advantage."
