Garvey Maceo maintain their winning ways

BEN FRANCIS Knockout kingpins Garvey Maceo started their campaign in the quarter-finals of the ISSA/ Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup in impressive fashion yesterday, blanking Fair Prospect 6-0 in their Group One fixture at Jamalco Sports Club.

"We had some adjustments in mind for the quarter-finals and we implemented them today and as you can see, it worked well for us," said Garvey Maceo's coach, Jeffrey Hewitt, whose team remains unbeaten after 17 games.

On course for title

"We believe we are definitely on course to win this title," Hewitt said. Like he has been doing all season, Garvey Maceo's skipper and leading marksman, Ashton Bennett, was again the top scorer for his team, scoring five times to lift his season's tally to 35 goals. Odane Richards accounted for the other goal.

While the Garvey Maceo team was at full throttle against Fair Prospect, champions Glenmuir suffered a setback in their Group Two Clarendon derby against Clarendon College in the feature game of the Jamalco double header.

After taking the lead with a 30th-minute strike by skipper James Thomas, the Jackie Walters-coached Glenmuir held on gingerly for the next 59 minutes before giving up a 90th-minute penalty, which the prolific Damali Samuels converted for Clarendon College, making the final score 1-1.

In the showdown between Rusea's and Munro College, which was played in a heavy downpour at the St. Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), the Anthony 'Follies' Williams-coached 'Russians' squeezed out a 1-0 win thanks to a first-half defender's goal, which resulted from a botched clearance by a Munro player.

A few more goals

"I am happy with the result, but I am not pleased with the way we played today as I thought we should have gotten a few more goals," said Williams.

"Nonetheless, a victory in the first game of the quarter-final round cannot be a bad result since it gives us a platform going into the next game," he said.

In the second of the two Group One games, Manchester took a 1-0 lead against Cornwall College courtesy of Shane Cousins and looked like running away with the game. However, a late strike by Radcliff Hall saw the contest ending 1-1.
