Glenmuir crush Annotto Bay 9-0

WESTERN BUREAU: REIGNING CHAMPIONS Glenmuir High School started their campaign in the inter-zone round of the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup in emphatic style yesterday, scoring a big 9-0 win over Annotto Bay in their Group Six fixture at the Spanish Town Prison Oval in St. Catherine.

In a game in which they scored seven times in the first half, the Jackie Walters-coached Glenmuir struck through Draion McNain (three), John Ross-Doyley (two), Ramon Whittaker (two) and Ricardo Webb (two).

"We played what I would consider a weak opponent today so I would not want to read too deep into this result," said coach Walters. "However, scoring seven times in the first half and getting two more in the second with our opponents playing with all 11 players behind the ball speaks well for the attacking aspect of our game."

Newly-crowned Ben Francis KO champions Garvey Maceo, who many pundits are predicting will dethrone Glenmuir for the coveted daCosta Cup, adding another victory to their unbeaten run this season, blanking Brimmervale 5-0 in their Group Five fixture at Brancourt in Clarendon.

In another dominant performance, skipper Ashton Bennett led from the front for Garvey Maceo, scoring three times and taking his season tally to 28 goals. Hopeton Edwards and Andrew Vanzie got the other goals for the Jeffrey Hewitt-coached team.

"We started out looking tired but the players basically stuck to our tactical preparation and got the job done," said Hewitt. "We are pleased with this result."

While most of the fancied teams were having a good afternoon, beaten Ben Francis KO finalists Rusea's had a most disappointing result when they were held to a 3-3 draw by Cedric Titus in their Group Two game, the opening game of a Jarrett Park doubleheader.

Rusea's, who never trailed in the game, got their goals from Ricardo Brown, Demar Lawrence and Damain Thompson (penalty) while Cedric Titus, who suffered a 4-0 loss to Cornwall College on their last visit to Jarrett Park, scored through Shavoi Clarke, Janial Bright (penalty) and Ladale Richie.

In the second game at Jarrett Park there was another surprise result, as much-fancied Cornwall College and Grange Hill battled to a 2-2 draw in Group One.
