Kenya breeze by Canada

GROS ISLET, St. Lucia (AP):

STEVE TIKOLO and Maurice Ouma scored half centuries to guide Kenya to a seven-wicket win over Canada yesterday in the opening Group C match of the World Cup.

Ouma scored 58 and the Tikolo made an unbeaten 72, including seven fours and a six, to help overhaul Canada's total of 199 all out with 40 balls to spare.

Geoff Barnett led the scoring for Canada with 41 off 50 balls, opening the batting after being sent in by Kenya.

After he was out, Canada lost steam and Kenya's spin attack restricted Canada. Hiren Varaiya returned 1-19, including three maidens. Kamande took 2-25 and Tikolo finished with 2-34.

Canada fast bowler Anderson Cummins became the second man to represent two different countries at the World Cup when he came in to bat at No.10, but he only made one run before he was run out.

Cummins, who played for the West Indies in the 1992 tournament, removed Kenya opener David Obuya for four for his first wicket in a major international tournament in 12 years. He returned 1-32. Umar Bhatti and Sunil Dhariram took Kenya's other wickets.

Canada play England on Sunday, while Kenya face New Zealand two days later.
