Glenmuir lift daCosta Cup

GLENMUIR High are the 2006 ISSA/Pepsi/JN daCosta Cup champions.

The Clarendon-based school defeated Frome Technical 3-2 on penalties at Jarrett Park on Saturday.

Both teams had battled to a 1-1 scoreline after regulation and extra-time.

In the penalty shoot-out James Thomas, Marvin Booth and Nevon Brown scored for Glenmuir while Obrian Woodbine and Odaine Ottey were successful with their penalties for Frome.

Glenmuir's coach Jackie Walters was elated with his team's triumph.

"After the disappointment of last year we really wanted to make amends and the players came out highly motivated and they got the job done," said Walters.

It was a game where one team then the other dominated the action. Frome had the upper hand in the first half and went ahead courtesy of a superb 17th minute strike from Rohan Watson. Collecting a pass from Woodbine, Watson made a brilliant turn before sending a bullet-like shot into the back of the Glenmuir net.

Glenmuir, however, hit back in the second half getting a 57th minute equaliser from James Thomas. He took on the Frome defence with a sizzling dribble which ended with a cracking shot which flashed past Shamar Mullings in goal for Frome.

Frome's coach, Boysie Nicholson, said his team was hit by injuries before the game.

"We played with a number of injured players, and in the second half we were forced to make changes as the players began to feel the effects of these injuries," Nicholson said.
