Clarendon teams dominate daCosta Cup quarter-finals

By Richard Bryan, Freelance Writer

Four Clarendon teams made it to the quarter-finals of the Pepsi/JN daCosta Cup competition following crucial wins in yesterday's last set of matches in the inter-zone round.

Glenmuir was first past the post when a second-half strike from Trevol Smith gave them a 1-0 win over Bog Walk, and with it Group Five honours. In fact, it was a happy afternoon for the fans who turned up for the double-header at Brancourt as the Ben Francis finalist, Clarendon College, later secured Group Four honours when Damali Samuels secured a 1-0 win against Holmwood Technical.

Denbigh, who surprisingly lost 0-2 to Manchester after dominating that game at the weekend, pulled off a 2-0 win over zone favourites Spaldings in a game played at Manchester High.

The fourth qualifier, Garvey Maceo, earned their spot as one of two best second-placed team, when they beat Charlemont 2-1 at Dinthill. Garvey Maceo, who had defeated Oracabessa 9-0, finished behind Group Six winners Titchfield, and qualified on the strength of a strong +9 goal difference.

The other four quarter-finalists are Frome, Rusea's, Titchfield and Bog Walk.

The inter-zone round will end this afternoon with a rescheduled game between Group One contenders William Knibb High School and Cedric Titus at the Elliston Wakeland Youth Centre in Falmouth. That game will not have a bearing on the quarter-final round as both teams are out of contention.
