Jamaica men second at champs

The Jamaican men's team had to settle for second spot when they went down 3-2 to Bermuda as play in the Lucozade Sport Junior Caribbean Squash Championships came to a close on Wednesday at the Liguanea Club courts.

Just as he did in the semi-finals against Guyana, which Jamaica won 3-2, Dane Schwier got the home team off to a solid start when he downed Chris Sgobba of Bermuda 9-6, 9-0 and 9-7.

However, the Bermudians were soon level as Robert Maycock easily got the better of Bruce Burrowes in a 9-6, 9-1, 9-0 encounter.

Despite a valiant effort after finding himself two games down, Jamaica's Ashanti Smith eventually lost out 9-4, 9-3 7-9, 9-2 to Noah Browne. Caribbean champion Chris Binnie brought things level when he demolished Andrew Stout 9-1, 9-0, 9-0, but Micah Franklin closed out victory for Bermuda with a 9-5, 9-3, 9-2 victory over Dilup Mahipalamudali.

Brmuda got the better of the OECS 3-2 in Tuesday's semi-finals. In action from the women's competition which was played in a round robin format, Jamaica lost out 3-2 to Barbados.

A 5-0 loss to Guyana in Tuesday's action and yesterday's loss put the girls out of contention for any of the top spots. Guyana wrapped up the top spot in the girls competition when they defeated Trinidad 3-2 in their final game, notching a perfect record.
