No Tear obliges in the mud
Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer
MOVING FROM last position at the top of the straight, NO TEAR stormed through in muddy conditions to win the one mile feature for the Alty Armond Memorial Cup (claming $220,000 - $200,000) in decisive fashion at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Installed a marginal favourite at 9-5 with claiming apprentice Marklee Buchanan aboard, NO TEAR was unable to go the early pace as OUTSWINGER (7-1) under in-form Dane Nelson and SWEET JADE (3-1) disputed the lead ahead of highly fancied THE SEA PRINCESS in the six-strong field.
OUTSWINGER swung into the straight a length or so clear of SWEET JADE on the inside, at which stage NO TEAR was forced to come wide into the straight, still in last position. But, although OUTSWINGER sprinted clear approaching the distance, looking all over a winner at this stage, NO TEAR had other ideas.
The seven-year-old mare from the stables of Everal Francis soon found top gear widest of all, sprouting wings in the last furlong to overhaul OUTSWINGER in deep stretch.
By Splinter Red out of the Sky Commander mare Surveyable, NO TEAR is owned by Desmond Nathan and bred by David DeLisser. This was her first win since scoring over 1500 metres on August 18 last year.
GOOD RIDES FROM HUSSEY
Earlier in the afternoon, four-time champion jockey Charles Hussey rode the first two winners on the card - NATURAL PRINCE and NASATOL both for leading trainer Wayne DaCosta - to be joint second in the standings with Trinidadian jockey Brian Harding (who was winless) with 25 winners each.
This puts them 12 adrift of champion jockey Trevor Simpson who has been automatically stood down for 21 calendar days by the Jamaica Racing Commission until the full Commission hears his case, this having to do with his failure to ride BADBOYBIN on its merits in a 1400m race last month. Simpson's case was referred to the Commission by the Stewards for determination.
The following is a brief account of the remaining races at rainy Caymanas Park:
First race: NATURAL PRINCE made all, but had to be hard driven in the closing stages to repel a strong challenge from super fit RUCKUS. (Second) ROOM FORTYNINE enjoyed a good lead in the centre coming on to the main track, but in the end failed to hold the fast-finishing favourite NASATOL at bay in a driving finish.
(Fourth) SIR CHARLES (5-1) led under pressure from TUTOR on the inside. Both turned for home on level terms but under a strong ride from Hubert Bartley, SIR CHARLES on the outside found extra in the closing to win in a driving finish. The 3-5 favourite LE CHIC closed milady for third in the underfoot conditions.
(Fifth) The favourite LITTLE ANTHONY made all impressively to win from THE AMERICAN GAL (rails) who was always prominent. (Sixth) The favourite BULLSEYE went wire to wire for an easy win.
(Seventh) Never far off the pace as TARBO and HEAVENLY DREAMS disputed the lead, JAMAICA JADE came wide into the straight and closed rapidly on the outside to overtake TARBO in deep stretch, winning by three-quarter length. The 3-5 favourite PROCEEDACCORDINGLY was not the best away on the inside and although moving into contention on the inside rails when the principals went wide into the straight, lacked the necessary assistance from his sparingly-used apprentice and ended up a disappointing fifth.
(Eight) MEDICAL ACCOUNT made most, before GOOD TO GO took over and held on well from the ever present NAVIGATOR.
(Ninth) INCORPORATE tried to make all, but proved no match for the 7-5 favourite JUST SOME THOUGHTS, who was always prominent on the rails, a furlong out. In the end, JUST SOME THOUGHTS held on well from the fast-finishing SHOW N' TELL.
(Tenth) QUIET STORM made all convincingly. Ante-post favourite HEAD OVER HEADS flipped over in the starting gate and was declared a late non-starter, while BABY KAYE dislodged her rider in the straight. |
