JAMAICA'S 'REGGAE Racers' left the island yesterday for the South Dakota motorsport track in Guyana, where they will contest the final leg of the Caribbean Champion Drivers Championship.

The championship will get under way on Sunday. The team includes top drivers Doug Gore, David Summerbell and Gary Williams - who will be driving Mitsubishi Evolutions - and Peter Rae with his New York Brake/Liberty Auto Sales RX7 Mazda.

"I am very confident that the team will do well," said team manager Hillary Jardine. "All Doug Gore needs to do is to finish in the first three of every event and he will win the championship," Jardine said. Jamaica's Gore assumed on the lead with 28 points following the first leg held at the Dover Raceway, St. Ann, in April.

The overwhelming favourite, Guyana's Mark Vieira, is in second place on 12 points. Defending champion David Summerbell is two points behind in third. Of the 19 races on the day's programme, there are three CMRC events. Should Vieira or Summerbell win all three races they would accumulate 30 points. If Gore finishes better than fourth in those races he will be the winner and new champion. The regional championship is expected to attract more than 20,000 spectators. Among the countries down to compete are Canada, the United States, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and hosts Guyana.
